Mission
Nicotine Free New Mexico is a statewide nicotine & tobacco* control coalition for training, education, community engagement, advocacy, and policy change to improve the health and well-being of all New Mexicans.
Everyone who is interested in nicotine and tobacco control is welcome to join!
The coalition includes community participants, community-based organizations, health and social service organizations, educators, public officials, businesses and employers, faith leaders and volunteer and civic organizations.
Provide opportunities for those interested in nicotine and tobacco prevention, intervention, and control to connect, share resources, and learn.
Participate in local and state policy issues surrounding nicotine and tobacco.
Objectives
- Host regular meetings to share priorities, resources, and updates on nicotine and tobacco policy.
- Offer learning opportunities on:
- Nicotine and tobacco trends
- Best practices for prevention/intervention programs
- Evidence-based practices
- Cessation screening tools and techniques
- Facilitate opportunities for coalition participants and community partners to participate in legislative sessions, committee meetings, roundtable discussions, civic engagement training, and other opportunities.
Nicotine and Tobacco Policies Supported by Nicotine Free New Mexico:
- Increasing tobacco tax to match evidence-based standards shown to reduce the number of youths who ever use nicotine and increase the number of adults who quit.
- Banning flavored tobacco and nicotine products, including menthol.
- Funding nicotine and tobacco control programs and activities.
- Establishing and maintaining nicotine-free buildings. This includes, but is not limited to, behavioral health facilities, social-service organizations, community-based organizations, and more.
* The word tobacco throughout this website refers to commercial tobacco and not the sacred and traditional use of tobacco by certain American Indian communities.
